According to breeders at ME and ND, planting for NFPT/SCRI at those two sites had to be delayed due to the late arrival of spring weather and rain fall events during the last couple of weeks. Greg Porter, a potato breeder at University of Maine, said that they only got three days of planting in so far, they needed to be planting full tilt until late June, and so tuber immaturity and lower yields will be a definite possibility. Susie Thompson, a potato breeder at North Dokato State University, said that they got half inch of rainfall right after two days of planting, so they had to stop and wait around until the weather gets better. Mother nature is demonstrating to human beings that she rules everything.
